David Marno is associate professor in the English Department at the University of California, Berkeley, where he teaches early modern literature, culture, and religion. He studied philosophy and history in Budapest, and comparative literature at Stanford. His first book Death Be Not Proud: The Art of Holy Attention (Chicago, 2016), argues for a reading of John Donne’s poems as devotional and philosophical attention exercises. He’s currently working on the English Department as a cultural phenomenon. In addition to being co-director of the Berkeley Center for the Study of Religion, he is a board member of Berkeley’s Renaissance and Early Modern Designated Emphasis and of the journal Representations
